FarrPoint's Connectivity Survey 2025: Reinforcing Mobile’s Central Role In Society.
FarrPoint's latest survey of the UK's digital landscape offers a valuable snapshot of the digital priorities and challenges local authorities face and highlights how these impact the industry's role in delivering nationwide connectivity.
It's encouraging to see the report emphasise the continued importance of mobile, and confirming that widespread 4G coverage remains a key objective for local authorities. This validates ongoing operator investments in expanding 4G networks and improving rural coverage, such as the Shared Rural Network, and demonstrating alignment with the needs and priorities of local communities.
Growing interest in 5G is another positive takeaway. While deployments may still be in their early stages, 31% of survey respondents are actively engaging with 5G initiatives, indicating growing recognition of its potential. This provides a clear signal to operators to continue pushing the boundaries of 5G innovation, developing use cases and exploring partnerships that showcase tangible benefits.
However, the report also highlights significant challenges. The ongoing struggle for funding and resources is a familiar hurdle. Equally important is the report's focus on the skills gap. As the industry moves towards more complex technologies like 5G and beyond, the need for local authorities to have the right skills and people in place is critical. Addressing this shortage is crucial and requires collaborative effort between operators, local authorities, and educational institutions to develop training programs and attract new talent.
The survey reveals some confusion surrounding the role of "digital champions." While the concept has merit, the report suggests a lack of clarity regarding their responsibilities and impact. This is an where we want to see the Government play a more active role, especially as it explores the reorganisaiton of local government. By collaborating with local authorities and community groups, and providing central funds, they can help define the role of digital champions to assist with deployment, promote digital inclusion and the benefits of enhanced connectivity.
Overall, FarrPoint's Connectivity Survey 2025 provides a useful overview of the UK's evolving digital landscape. It reinforces the vital role mobile operators play in delivering essential connectivity, while highlighting the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. By addressing the issues raised in the report and working closely with local authorities, the mobile industry and national government can ensure that the UK remains at the forefront of the digital revolution.
