Connecting The Countryside: A Year Of Rural Mobile Progress

2024 has been a year of significant strides in rural connectivity. Let's take a look at the key developments that are transforming lives in even the most remote parts of the UK.

Shared Rural Network: Expanding the 4G Frontier

The Shared Rural Network (SRN) initiative, a joint venture between mobile network operators and the government, is making impressive progress towards its goal of 95% 4G coverage by 2025. Ofcom reported in August that all four MNOs had now met their targets, with benefits extending coverage to over 280,000 properties and 16,000 kilometres of roads.

Rural Connectivity Week

To highlight the importance of rural connectivity, we hosted the inaugural Rural Connectivity Week. This event, in partnership with mobile network operators, Good Things Foundation, and DMSL, showcased the crucial role of mobile technology in supporting hard-to-reach areas and driving economic growth.

As part of this week, we spoke to mobile operator Three UK’s Chief Network Officer Iain Milligan in a dedicated episode of the Live Better Connected podcast.

A Helicopter Ride to Better Connectivity

Mobile UK's Director of Policy and Communications, Gareth Elliott, embarked on a unique journey to the Outer Hebrides. Witnessing firsthand the installation of a new mobile mast via helicopter, Gareth gained insight into the challenges and rewards of extending mobile networks to remote locations.

Real-World Impact: Transforming Rural Lives

The improvements in rural connectivity are far-reaching, with benefits including:

  • Enhanced Emergency Services: Quicker response times in rural areas
  • Agricultural Innovation: Supporting precision farming and technology adoption
  • Remote Work Opportunities: Empowering rural residents to work from anywhere
  • Improved Education: Enabling access to online learning resources
  • Economic Growth: Supporting local businesses and digital transformation

As we look to the future, the continued expansion of rural connectivity will play a vital role in levelling the playing field and ensuring that everyone, regardless of location, can benefit from the power of mobile technology.
